The Client’s Challenge

ADAC is a world-class manufacturer of exterior door handles for vehicles and has developed a range of innovative technologies and processes. It approached Mechatronic to develop a cell to assemble and function-test a rear tailgate handle for Land Rover.

The Client’s Specific Needs

A multi-functional machine which would:

  • locate the tailgate handle and correctly place the badge
  • simultaneously check orientation
  • check operation of the lamp
  • deliver and place to location a number of brass threaded inserts within the plastic moulding,
  • clip on a cover moulding
  • automatically engrave part number and production data onto the finished part.

The Mechatronic Solution

Using lean manufacturing principles, engineers at Mechatronic worked closely with the customer to develop a concept that fulfilled all the customer’s criteria within a compact footprint. In the event that set quality parameters were not met during the process, the part would be locked in to the fixture.

The Results

Process and cost savings: 30% in both assembly and capital costs via:

  • A reduction in cell operators
  • Simplification of layout and control systems with one control cabinet managing three machines
  • Reduction in the number of sensing devices needed
